What is ICC then?

International Certificate of Competency (ICC) presents a set of standards, developed by Economic Commission Committee of United Nations Organization for Europe. It has international status, recognized worldwide and has categories covering sailing boats (till 24 m), power boats (till 24 m) in inland and open waters. Almost all European countries, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia recognize ICC as the only legitimate state certificate, recognized absolutely by world jurisdictions. Issued certificate is valid for 10 years and can be renewed upon application without attestation.

What is the point of ICC?

Nowadays you need to hold International Certificate of Competency ICC to handle a vessel or charter a yacht in some European countries. This requirement is applied to navigation in territorial Mediterranean waters and some Atlantic coast countries of European continent. Usually ICC is not required in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, but we do recommend you to connect with European country’s authorities to this point before you decide to enter its territorial waters on your vessel.

ICC CEVNI is approved by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and its regulations are set by resolution #40 on inland waterways of European Union. That is why ICC is recognized internationally, it proves that the holder of this certificate meets all requirements of vessel operator’s competency set out in Resolution #40.

Unlike with International Bareboat Skipper IYT this certificate has a state status and issued by Department of Transportation of the country’s government – European Union member. Th certificate is recognized in all EU countries without and all countries signed International Maritime Convention.

What countries recognize ICC?

The following countries recognize Resolution 40 and officially recognize ICC as a proof of vessel’s captain competency on their territory:
